Moving to a new city for college or a job raises one big question first: should you stay in a PG (paying guest) or rent a flat? Both have clear advantages. The right choice depends on your budget, lifestyle and how long you plan to stay.
1. Monthly cost
A PG bed usually costs between ₹5,000 and ₹18,000 a month depending on the city and sharing type, and the rent normally includes food, electricity, Wi-Fi and housekeeping. A flat looks cheaper when the rent is split between flatmates, but you also pay electricity, internet, maid, cooking gas, maintenance and furniture separately.
- PG: one fixed, predictable amount every month.
- Flat: lower rent per person, but 25–40% extra in running costs.
2. Security deposit and moving-in cost
Most PGs ask for one month of rent as a deposit. Flats in metro cities often ask for two to ten months of rent as a deposit, plus furniture and appliance costs if the flat is unfurnished. If you are short on savings, a PG is far easier to move into.
3. Freedom and privacy
Flats give you complete freedom: no gate-closing time, you can cook what you like, and friends and family can visit. PGs often have rules on visitors, timings and guests of the opposite gender. If privacy matters, choose a flat or a single-occupancy PG room.
4. Food
A good PG saves you hours every week because meals are included. In a flat you will either cook, hire a cook (₹3,000–₹6,000 a month) or order food, which adds up quickly.
5. Safety and maintenance
Managed PGs and co-living spaces usually have CCTV, security guards and a warden, and they fix problems quickly. In a flat, repairs depend on the landlord's response.
Our verdict
Choose a PG if you are new to the city, are staying less than a year, or want a hassle-free life with food included. Choose a flat if you are staying long term, have reliable flatmates, and value independence. Either way, visit the property, talk to current tenants and read the agreement before paying anything.
